Butterfly clicking is a technique where two fingers — usually the index and middle finger — alternate on the same mouse button. Because each finger only has to click half as often, the combined rate can be much higher than with a single finger.

How to butterfly click

  1. Place your index and middle finger side by side over the left mouse button.
  2. Press with one finger, and as it lifts press with the other.
  3. Keep both fingers low and close to the button so they barely travel.
  4. Start slowly with a steady rhythm, then speed up.

Check your speed on the butterfly click test.

Why people like it

  • More controlled than jitter clicking.
  • Often more comfortable to keep up.
  • Rhythm is consistent, which helps in games that reward steady clicking.

Downsides

  • It needs a mouse with a wide enough button and good switches on both halves.
  • It puts more clicks on the switch, which can wear a mouse faster.
  • It can be awkward at first and hard to combine with accurate aiming.

Butterfly clicking and your mouse

Some gamers prefer mice with a flat or wide left button. If you notice double clicks or missed presses, run the double click test.
