Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where a “word” is counted as five characters. Most people type at a few dozen WPM, and typing faster saves real time at work and in games with chat.
1. Check your starting point
Take the typing speed test and note your WPM and accuracy. Retake it in a week.
2. Learn proper finger placement
Rest your fingers on the home row (A S D F and J K L 😉 and use the same finger for the same keys every time. Touch typing — typing without looking at the keys — is the biggest single speed gain.
3. Accuracy first, speed second
Correcting mistakes costs more time than slow, clean typing. Aim for 95% accuracy or better, then push speed.
4. Practise a little every day
Ten to fifteen minutes daily beats a long weekly session. Keep sessions short to avoid tired hands.
5. Fix your setup
- Sit with your elbows at about 90° and wrists straight.
- Use a keyboard you find comfortable.
- Check your keys all register with the keyboard test.
6. Warm up and rest
Stretch your fingers and wrists, and stop if anything hurts.
Common mistakes
- Looking at the keyboard.
- Rushing and building bad habits.
- Ignoring accuracy.
- Practising when tired.
